- rough plans for the front garden. i decided on six zones (not the permaculture ones) based on various guilds.
- helpful wife and less-helpful dog
- cabin-fever aubergines are going out a bit early, but i think they look strong enough. and it’s been 18c/64f this week, so maybe they won’t die…
- diy cloches for cucumbers and green beans
- optimistic early-season beets
- the back garden is pretty active as well

I had a bit of a blub when two of my silverbeet seedlings shrivelled up at the first sign of hot weather, but I cheered up when the others sprouted their second set of leaves. They’re growing so quickly, I’m tempted to just pull up a chair and watch.

Strolling the internuts, I ran across a post by fellow garden enthusiast Trubadeur about a crew of visionaries called Inner City Farms straight outta Vancouver. They’ve taken it upon themselves to righteously rip up lawns and replant them with tiny farms for their CSA. Grass is for zeros. Crops are for.. heroes? Ugh.
In Brooklyn we grow on the roofs of our garbage can containers, so a lush half acre seems like an obvious opportunity. With all that direct sun? C’mon. I like the cut of their jibs. Have a look at their Flickr for more of these lovely images.

Oh, So You Compost? Neat. These People Invented a Closed Kitchen Ecosystem.
Food waste accounts for a disturbing amount of trash in the U.S. It would be nice if everyone could recycle some of that food waste back into the food web.
Composting is one idea, but not everyone has the stomach for that, especially indoors. Check out this idea from FastCompany. It’s like nature meets Ikea!
